Anybody have comments on the quality of the rough material as far as the finished end product? I'd like to know about how much the quality varies among lots. I plan on purchasing a larger amount next time for slabbing and carving and would prefer not having unusable shattered pieces.

Welcome. There is a range in the quality of some of the stones. Most of the issues, in cutting is due the experience of the cutter, and the unique properties of each mineral. A seasoned lapidary will be quite happy with the material. If you have any specfic cutting questions, please be sure to ask us first.
